About LAPID
The Digital Image Processing Laboratory (LAPID) at the National University develops methods and algorithms for digital image processing using mathematical models inspired by the human computer vision system and artificial intelligence. It offers image storage, manipulation, and analysis services through a freely accessible Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for research purposes. LAPID provides a space for undergraduate and graduate students to develop their final graduation projects in artificial intelligence. The knowledge acquired and ongoing research have enabled researchers to publish their work, form alliances, and train in image processing and AI applications.
LAPID originates from the research project registered in the SIA 0511116 Academic Information System of the National University, led by MSc researcher Johnny Villalobos Murillo.
Vision
The Digital Image Processing Laboratory aims to train professionals who generate knowledge, promoting research with a humanistic, social, and ecological perspective.
Mission
To train human resources in Digital Image Processing with research and teaching skills, fostering humanistic training and commitment to Costa Rican society.
General Objective
Maintain a research laboratory at the School of Informatics that develops methods and algorithms for digital image processing using mathematical models inspired by computer vision and artificial intelligence, contributing to Costa Rican society and the education of professionals.
Specific Objectives
- Maintain a medical image database through an image storage and manipulation system, enabling national and international researchers to use it for health, computer vision, and AI research.
- Develop methods, algorithms, and models for digital image processing with the participation of researchers and students, supporting final graduation projects and supervised professional practice.
- Contribute to Costa Rican society and the education of professionals in computer vision and artificial intelligence.
